“Piccolos In The Pub” consists of three movements of Celtic flavor featuring a pair of piccolos, but giving ample voice to the rest of the choir. The piece opens with the piccolos playing “The Jiggered Piccolo,” a jig that builds to involve the entire choir, then moves to the lower flutes before returning to the full group, where the piccolos lead to a driving finish. Calm intercedes in the form of “Glenwood Air,” a beautiful and peaceful air to which the piccolos add subtle frosting. “Friday Afternoon” closes the piece with a wild, happy, and driving jig, in which the exhilaration is only briefly interrupted by rush-hour traffic. Piccolos lead the charge as the choir careens into the weekend with a flourish.
Scored for 2 piccolos, 3 C flutes, alto flute, bass flute, and optional contrabass. [A subcontrabass in G part is available by request.] Performance time is approximately four and half minutes.
