Sammartini, Giovanni Battista (Arr. Lisa R. McArthur)
Symphony No. 1, J.C. 7
Giovanni Battista Sammartini was one of the earliest Symphony composers and led the way to the Classical style of composition. This 3-movement work has a 1st movement in sonata form, a lyrical 2nd movement with beautiful upper register harmonies, and a joyful final movement. The upper 2 parts have a lot of melodic interplay and the alto & bass provide the harmonic and rhythmic structure. This work was originally written for string orchestra and is arranged for 2 C flutes, alto & bass, OR 3 C flutes and bass, and is perfect for a student quartet.
