Enigma Variations, Op. 36 (Variations VIII "W.N." & IX "Nimrod") (Arr. by John Davis)
*FINALIST in the 2004 NFA Newly-Published Music Competition
English composer Edward Elgar’s premise for his "Variation on an Original Theme" was to musically characterize a dozen of his friends and associates. Each variation is designated by the initials or pseudonym of the person portrayed (hence the enigma). It is scored for 2 piccolos, 4 C flutes, 2 altos and bass.
