This is a transcription of the first movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata Op. 27 No. 2. This adagio sostenuto movement while flowing like "moonlight shining on a lake" to quote the poet Ludwig Rellstab in 1832 about the piece, was never so titled by Beethoven himself. The sonata was titled "quasi una fantasia" or "almost a fantasy". It was dedicated to the seventeen year old girl he (purportedly) loved, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, a piano student of his. It's been a popular classic since its first appearance. This arrangement is scored for 3 C flutes, 1 alto flute and 1 bass flute.
